Therapy

At Wayi we are committed to providing a safe, secure and stimulating learning environment for all students. We understand that students reach their full potential only when they are happy, healthy and safe, and that a positive school culture, where student participation is encouraged and valued, helps to engage students and support them in their learning. Our school acknowledges that student wellbeing and student learning outcomes are closely linked.

We have developed a range of strategies to promote engagement, an inclusive and safe environment, positive behaviour, and respectful relationships for all students in our school. We recognise the importance of student friendships and peer support in helping children and students feel safe and less isolated. We acknowledge that some students may need extra social, emotional or educational support at school, and that the needs of students will change over time as they grow and learn.

To support this we have developed a range of strategies to promote engagement, an inclusive and safe environment, positive behaviour, and respectful relationships for all students in our school at both a whole school and individual level.

Therapy Team

The Therapy Team at Wayi School work collaboratively as a part of classroom teams to identify, establish, and implement educational goals and strategies for students, and as such, build the capacity of classroom team to apply a therapeutic approach confidently.

As Wayi Schools’ core values being Voice, Choice and Independence, the Therapy Team work closely with teaching teams, classroom staff and leadership to ensure our core values are embedded in all strategies and best practices implemented on a whole school, classroom, and individual student level. The Wayi Therapy Team also welcome collaboration with students’ NDIS therapy team to ensure their needs are understood and met.

Speech Pathology

Speech Pathologists (SP) specifically assess, plan, implement, and evaluate speech, language, literacy, swallowing, play, and communication skills.

At Wayi School our goal is for all our students to be autonomous communicators and for every student to have a voice. This means each student is supported to have a way to greet, complain, ask a question, comment, request, express an opinion, share a story, joke, or idea and more!

Our ultimate goal for our students is to be able to say whatever they want to say to whoever they want to say it to, whenever they want to say it and however, they want to say it.

SPs develop strategies on a whole school, whole class, and individual student level, with a focus on the development of:

  • Language (words and sentences)
  • Speech (sounds in words)
  • Multimodal Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)
  • Play, social skills, and interaction (utilising ‘Learn to Play’ program)
  • Mealtime and feeding support

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapists (OT) focus on promoting independence and supporting everyday participation of meaningful activities.

At Wayi School, OTs empower our students to actively participate in their school day meaningfully and safely.

OTs develop strategies on a whole school, whole class, and individual student level, with a focus on the development of:

  • Personal Hygiene
  • Toileting
  • Emotional and sensory regulation
  • Play skills
  • Life skills (e.g., cooking in food technology, VET course)
  • Fine motor skills (e.g., handwriting, buttoning, shoe lacing)
  • Seating and positioning
  • Daily routine tasks
