Is Wayi School the school for your child?
Wayi School strives to provide a safe, inclusive and supportive school environment which values the human rights of all students and staff. Our school provides highly individualised programs of learning for students with an intellectual disability. We welcome students from 5 to 18 years of age. School participation maximises life opportunities for children and young people by providing them with a comprehensive learning program and access to support networks. It also helps to develop important skills, knowledge and values that set them up for further learning and active participation within their local community. Wayi School is committed to creating a school community where all members of our school community are welcomed, accepted and treated equitably and with respect regardless of their backgrounds or personal attributes such as race, language, religious beliefs, gender identity, disability or sexual orientation so that they can participate, achieve and thrive at school.
What our students like about Wayi
Hi my name is Ruby, I am 13 years old and in year 8. This is my first year at Wayi School. I like this school because the teachers are kind and helpful and they know how to joke and are good at teaching. The school is safe and set out well, I like being with the secondary students. Everyone loves to play basketball and football at lunch, this is my favourite part of the day. This year I have worked hard in maths and writing and I am proud that I have learnt about time.
Primary Program
Our Primary School focuses on developing the foundational skills students need to support learning and independence. Individual student learning goals aligned with the Victorian Curriculum are identified through collaboration between teachers, families and students where possible. Teachers and therapists work together to design learning programs that meet each individual's needs through a holistic learning approach, with opportunities for students to build their skills through the inclusion of play-based and sensory learning opportunities.
Secondary Program
Our Secondary School focus continues to build on the opportunities and student skills learnt throughout the primary years, extending the focus on developing independence and the skills required for the future, including careers education, living skills and social skills groups. Students continue to engage in all key learning areas through Individual Learning Plans developed in collaboration with families in Student Support Group meetings. Therapist and teachers continue to work closely to design and implement programs to meet each individual student's needs.
Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC)
The Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC) is a new inclusive and flexible certificate offered at Wayi School in our Upper Secondary years. VPC equips students with the skills, knowledge, values and capabilities to be active and informed citizens, lifelong learners and confident and creative individuals. During students' VPC journey, students will complete units in literacy, numeracy, work-related skills, and personal development, with opportunities for students to participate in VET and school-based apprenticeships or traineeships.
