Continuous Reporting Focus – Math (Statistics and Probability)
Room 5
As part of Wayi School’s Continuous Reporting Schedule, Room 5 has been focusing on Mathematics, with an emphasis on Statistics and Probability, throughout the semester. Our students have engaged in a variety of practical and meaningful learning experiences designed to build their understanding of collecting, organising, representing and interpreting data.
Throughout the semester, students have been learning to make choices, collect information, count, sort, compare and represent data. Learning experiences have been carefully adapted to meet individual learning and communication needs, allowing students to participate through gestures, visuals, objects, verbal responses and other forms of communication.
Students explored familiar and engaging topics, including pizza preferences. Each student made an individual choice by selecting a happy face for “Yes” or a sad face for “No” to show whether they liked pizza. With support, students placed their responses onto a class display, creating a visual representation of our collected data. This provided opportunities to practise making choices, communicating preferences and actively participating in data collection.
Students also explored three different food choices, indicating their preferences using thumbs up or thumbs down. Their individual responses were brought together to create our Class Data Showcase, where students explored the results and compared the different choices made by the class.
Through these hands-on experiences, students have developed their early statistical understanding while strengthening their counting, communication, decision-making and mathematical thinking skills. We are proud of the enthusiasm, confidence and participation our students have demonstrated throughout their learning this semester.
Room 6
In Room 6, we have been having lots of fun learning about Statistics through something everyone can relate to — food! 🍎🍌🥨
The students have been exploring the concepts of “Yes” and “No” and “Like” and “Dislike” by looking at different food items and sharing their preferences. Using Yes and No visual supports, students are able to communicate whether they like or dislike each food.
We record everyone’s responses on the whiteboard next to their names and then work together to find out how many students said “Yes” and how many said “No.” This gives the students a clear and meaningful visual representation of our class data.
It has been wonderful to see the students becoming more confident in making choices, expressing their preferences and answering questions using their visuals. Some students are also beginning to join in with counting the responses, making connections between numbers and the information we have collected.
Through these fun, hands-on experiences, Room 6 is developing early skills in communication, counting, making choices and understanding data — all while exploring some delicious food!
