CHILD SAFETY AND WELLBEING AT WAYI SCHOOL – INFORMATION FOR FAMILIES AND THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY

Wayi School is committed to providing an environment where students are safe and feel safe.
Our child safety framework (https://wayischool.vic.edu.au/our-school/documents-policies-reports/) explains how we support and maintain child safety and wellbeing at Wayi School. It includes our:
• Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy
• Child Safety Reporting and Responding Obligations Procedures, and
• Child Safety Code of Conduct, which outlines acceptable and unacceptable behaviours for all staff and volunteers at our school.
Our students and families are important partners in providing a child safe environment. These regular newsletter reminders are one of the ways we ensure our school community is aware of:
• our commitment to child safety, and
• how to provide feedback or raise child safety concerns.
If you have any concerns about child safety at any time, please contact Wayi School at 73006600. Any child safety complaints or concerns are treated seriously. For more information about our school’s complaints process, see our Complaints Policy (https://wayischool.vic.edu.au/our-school/documents-policies-reports/)
We also welcome your ideas on ways we can improve our approach to child safety and wellbeing. If you have any suggestions or comments please contact Wayi School on 7300 6600 or at wayi.school@education.vic.gov.au

STUDENT SUPPORT GROUP (SSG) MEETINGS

Student Support Group (SSG) meetings are a valuable opportunity for parents/carers, students, and school staff to work together in planning and supporting a student’s learning, wellbeing, and development. These meetings focus on your child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP), which outlines specific learning goals across key areas such as English, Mathematics, and Personal and Social Capabilities.

When and How

SSG meetings take place in Weeks 4 and 5 of each term. Meetings can be held in person, by phone, or via Microsoft Teams. Unless otherwise advised, we will assume your preference is to attend the meeting in person. If you’d prefer a phone or Teams meeting, please let your child’s teacher know.

If you need to make changes to your child’s usual departure, please notify the classroom teacher.

Student Involvement

Students are welcome and encouraged to attend their SSG meeting to share their thoughts about their learning. Please note that supervision is not available for students outside of the scheduled meeting time.

Bookings

Bookings will open on Compass from Monday of Week 3. Please log in and select a suitable time to meet with your child’s teacher.

If you have trouble accessing Compass or need help with booking, please contact the school office.

Arrival and Parking

Parent parking is available on Aitkin Boulevard. Please enter the school through the Darrang (administration) building when attending your meeting.

We look forward to partnering with you to support your child’s continued growth and success.

STUDENT ATTENDANCE

Regular and consistent school attendance is essential for our students. Attending each day supports the development of routines and structure, as well as the building of strong relationships.
We recognise when children are unwell, they can not perform at their best and need to recover at home until well enough to return to the learning environment. If your child is unwell, or unable to attend school for another reason, such as a medical appointment, please ensure you notify Wayi School as soon as possible. Absence notifications can be made to the school in person, via phone or Compass.
Please note, if your child is going to be absent for an extended period (more than 3 consecutive school days), please notify Wayi School Principal, Leanne Sinnadurai; this includes family vacations. The prior notification will allow us to arrange appropriate supports to help maintain your child’s educational needs during their absence.

BEING SUNSMART AT WAYI

As the warmer weather continues, it’s super important to be sun smart! Here is how we are going to keep our students safe and healthy when they’re out in the sun:

Hats On! 🧢 Please send your child to school with a hat that has their first and last name clearly labelled. It’s a must for all outdoor activities!

Sunscreen Ready! 🌞 Our school is using Hamilton Active Family 50+SPF high protection sunscreen. If this doesn’t suit your child, please let their classroom teacher know and provide an alternative.

Stay Hydrated! 💧 Don’t forget to pack full water bottles for your students every day to keep them hydrated and happy.

Supporting All Students 🌟 If your child finds it challenging to stay sun-safe, rest assured that our staff will work with our Occupational Therapists to make reasonable adjustments that cater to their sensory needs. This will be discussed in the next Student Support Group meeting.

All staff and students need to use sunscreen and wear a hat during outside playtimes.

Let’s work together to ensure everyone enjoys the sunshine safely!
