ATTENDANCE

Regular and consistent school attendance is essential for our students. Attending each day supports the development of routines and structure, as well as the building of strong relationships.
We recognise when children are unwell, they can not perform at their best and need to recover at home until well enough to return to the learning environment. If your child is unwell, or unable to attend school for another reason, such as a medical appointment, please ensure you notify Wayi School as soon as possible. Absence notifications can be made to the school in person, via phone or Compass.
Please note, if your child is going to be absent for an extended period (more than 3 consecutive school days), please notify Wayi School Principal, Leanne Sinnadurai; this includes family vacations. The prior notification will allow us to arrange appropriate supports to help maintain your child’s educational needs during their absence.

PERSONAL ITEMS AND PROPERTY

Parents/carers are advised that students who bring personal items/property to school are responsible for those items. In the event they are lost, stolen or damaged, school insurance does not cover the cost of reimbursement or repairs.

To safeguard phones and ensure they do not impact on student learning, students are responsible for handing them to the office on arrival and collecting them on departure. Phones are then securely stored during the school day.

CHARISSE GARCIA – LITERACY LEADER

A Warm Wayi Welcome to Everyone!

I’m thrilled to introduce myself as your Learning Specialist for Literacy. Last December, I completed my Master of Learning Intervention, a valuable experience that deepened my understanding of evidence-based practices in literacy, numeracy, and wellbeing. This year, my learning journey continues through the Teaching Excellence Program.

Excitingly, we are embarking on the implementation of our whole-school phonics program! In Term 1, our focus is on assessments to establish each student’s starting point in their GPC (grapheme-phoneme correspondence) set. We will assess letter and sound knowledge, word and non-word reading, and fluency. In Week 8, teachers will engage in collaborative planning sessions to analyse student data and prepare for Term 2’s structured literacy instruction.

To support this initiative, we have planned mini-professional learning sessions throughout the year, covering phonics instruction, Wayi’s instructional model, and explicit teaching strategies. I look forward to working alongside you as we build strong literacy foundations for our students!
